The 5 best motels in Newcastle for budget-friendly stays

  • Location and accessibility: A motel should be easily accessible and well-placed for sightseeing, dining, and transportation links. For convenience, I focused on places near Newcastle city centre or major roads and airports.
  • Comfort and value for money: Budget stays shouldn't mean sacrificing comfort. I prioritised motels with clean, well-maintained rooms, comfortable beds, and essential amenities.
  • Guest reviews: I dug through hundreds of reviews, looking for motels that consistently provide excellent service, clean rooms, and a hassle-free stay.
  • Facilities and perks: I chose motels that offer extra perks to give travellers the best experience for their money. A 24-hour reception, pet-friendly policies, or complimentary breakfast can make all the difference.

I remember when my cousin planned a weekend getaway to Newcastle. He was all about exploring the city on a budget. But his biggest mistake was picking a random cheap motel without checking reviews first.

Long story short, he ended up in a place where the bathroom door wouldn’t shut properly, and the air conditioning sounded like an old car engine struggling uphill.

Unfortunately, his stay wasn’t exactly restful. This experience made me realise that finding an affordable stay doesn’t mean settling for a bad one.

So, I did my research and found some great options. Here are my top picks for budget-friendly motels that won’t leave you regretting your stay.

How much does motel accommodation cost in Newcastle?

Motel accommodation typically costs £55 and £135 per night in Newcastle. However, the price may change depending on the location, room type, and amenities offered.

1. Motel One

I recently stayed at Motel One because its central location and budget-friendly rates drew me in.

I was surprised by the modern and stylish rooms for a reasonably priced hotel. While compact, they didn’t feel cramped, and I loved the little touches—free WiFi, a flat-screen TV, and a rainfall shower.

One of my favourite spots was the lounge/bar, which had a relaxed vibe. However, the breakfast buffet is not included in the accommodation, but it’s reasonably priced.

Another minor downside was the air recirculation system; it didn’t cool the room as effectively as I’d hoped. I stayed during mild weather, so it wasn’t a deal-breaker, but I imagine summer stays could get uncomfortable.

Nevertheless, I love the staff here. They were friendly and attentive to all my needs during my stay. Being treated nicely makes the whole experience top-notch.

Pros

  • Located in Newcastle’s city centre
  • Modern and well-designed rooms
  • Trendy lounge/bar with a breakfast buffet

Cons

  • Rooms have issues with the air recirculation system
  • Extra cost for breakfast buffet

Great location and service

“Great hotel tucked into a side street in the dead centre of Newcastle, away from all the noise, what more can you wish for. The hotel staff was very attentive and informative, the cleaning staff were very efficient and left a nice note in the room. The lobby looks amazing and has been very tastefully refurbished from its prior use as a car park! The breakfast on offer is decent too. Nice place to lodge while visiting the city.”

Perfect for tourists

My room was clean, and the customer service from the front desk was GREAT. I stayed there from February 10th to 13th, and the location was perfect for tourists. I felt safe, and everything I needed was within walking distance. I would definitely recommend this place!”

Cairn Hotel Newcastle might fit the bill if you’re looking for a budget-friendly motel stay with a bit of character.

The motel has 78 modern rooms spread across two buildings. Each room has free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

However, some guests have mentioned that certain rooms are in a separate building down the street, which can be inconvenient—especially for breakfast runs in bad weather.

Even so, the on-site dining is a real plus. You can have bold Asian-fusion dishes, casual burgers, and drinks at Cairn Hotel’s Spy Bar. This is a strong pick if you like having food and nightlife right on your doorstep.

Aside from that, I like the location and social vibe. But if you’re a light sleeper, bar noise and loud guests could be an issue, which was the problem my friend experienced during her stay.

Pros

  • Top-notch amenities
  • Stylish rooms with comfortable beds
  • Good on-site dining

Cons

  • Some rooms are in a separate building
  • Reports of the noisy environment

Lively atmosphere

Stayed overnight at the beginning of January. Had to go back for 3 nights so booked in again.

Clean, modern room. Plenty of hot water. Adjoining bar is lively with happy hour every afternoon/early evening. Soho restaurant where you can eat in the evening and a lovely breakfast. Buffet service but you can ask for eggs how you want them. Reasonable price too. Special mention for Steven on reception and Gani in the restaurant but all the staff were very friendly and helpful. The area is very nice with lots of hotels with bars and restaurants so something for everyone. Some nice little shops nearby. Very close to the city centre. We will deffinatly use this hotel again next time we’re up in Newcastle.

A solid budget stay

Pleasant and clean room. Shower room clean. Helpful staff. Parking was very tricky, recommended getting checked in early. Have paid more locally for much worse. Will be using this hotel again. Bar downstairs was very nice if a bit expensive. Breakfast was included and buffet style. Nice way to start the day.

Staying in easyHotel Newcastle City Centre seemed like a solid choice. Considering the low price, I didn’t expect much, but the location was convenient. It was great for a quick city break or an overnight stay after a night out.

The room itself was as basic as it gets but functional—a comfortable bed, a clean en suite bathroom, and free Wi-Fi. It was nothing fancy but covered all the essentials for a no-frills stay.

I’d also recommend checking if your room has a window before booking. Some don’t, and while it didn’t bother me much, I can see how the lack of natural light could be a dealbreaker for some.

Aside from that, storage is minimal—there’s no wardrobe or drawers, but it’s not a big deal if you’re travelling light and just need a place to crash.

Regardless of these minor drawbacks, I did appreciate the 24/7 reception, luggage storage, and tea and coffee vending machine. These made things more convenient, especially for late check-ins.

Plus, for around £40 a night, I’d say it’s one of the best low-cost options in Newcastle.

Pros

  • One of the most affordable stays in Newcastle
  • Clean and comfortable rooms
  • 24/7 reception and luggage storage

Cons

  • Some rooms have no windows
  • Minimal storage

Friendly service and great location

“I recently had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful hotel, and I must say, the experience was delightful from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, Sophie warmly welcomed us with a smile and made the check-in process quick and seamless. Her friendly demeanor and exceptional service set the tone for the rest of our stay. The location of the hotel is fantastic—convenient, accessible, and close to everything we needed. Whether it was dining, shopping, or exploring nearby attractions, we appreciated the ease of getting around.

The hotel rooms were another highlight. Clean, comfortable, and well-appointed, they provided the perfect space to unwind after a busy day. All in all, this hotel ticks the right boxes: great service, prime location, and comfortable accommodations. With such welcoming staff and attention to detail, I would gladly stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!”

Perfect for a last-minute stay

“Needed a reasonably cheap last minute room as flight home cancelled. This did not disappoint. Super comfortable bed and lovely linen, towels and hand wash, shower gel. Room clean and quiet. Lovely friendly staff. Only thing missing was a glass or two for a drink in the room.

Handy to walk down to the river and close to railway,  bars and restaurants.”

Given its convenient location, just off the A1 motorway and close to the city centre—the Holiday Inn Express Newcastle Gateshead is suitable for business and leisure travel.

One of the best things about this hotel is the free parking and complimentary breakfast buffet—rare finds at budget-friendly accommodation, especially in a city like Newcastle.

Speaking of the buffet, their breakfast selection was quite basic, and you might struggle if you have dietary restrictions. I was hoping for more vegetarian options, but choices were limited.

On the other hand, the rooms were simple but functional. Each room features a work desk (with reliable free WiFi), en-suite bathroom, and tea/coffee-making facilities. Honestly, I’d suggest this place for those on business trips.

But you know what I like the most about this place? It’s the friendly staff. They were always ready to help, making my stay more enjoyable. I asked for coffee, and they delivered it to my room quickly.

Pros

  • Free parking and Wi-Fi
  • Complimentary breakfast buffet
  • Close to the centre and major attractions
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Breakfast lacks variety

Great value for money

“Great stopover hotel at reasonable prices for holiday inn quality. Free parking, free breakfast, good rooms with coffee and tea and walk in showers. Staff very helpful. One of the best in the area and easy access to MetroCentre and central Newcastle without the inflated prices of downtown hotels”

– Ooft Sauce, Google Review

Highly recommended services

“This is the first time we have stayed at a holiday inn and we would definitely use it again. The room was very comfortable with all we needed. Great shower also. Another thing I liked was we could get extra coffee and milk for our room without having to ask at reception. Breakfast was very good as well. We highly recommend it.”

5. Travelodge

My friend needed a budget-friendly place to rest near Newcastle International Airport, so I suggested Travelodge. I’ve stayed here once, and it deserves a spot on this list.

It’s just a short drive to the terminal, with easy access to the city centre and local attractions. And yes, they offer free parking. That’s a major plus, especially for an airport hotel.

The room itself is simple but well-maintained. The king-size bed, pillows, and en-suite bathroom—ah, they were all comfortable and clean.

However, there were a couple of downsides. There is no lift, so if you have heavy luggage or mobility concerns, you’ll want to request a ground-floor room in advance. But don’t worry because their staff are friendly and attentive to guest needs.

There were also reports of inconsistency with room assignments. A few guests mentioned they booked months ahead but didn’t get their preferred ground-floor rooms, which could be frustrating.

Pros

  • Free parking
  • Attentive and friendly staff
  • Easy access to Newcastle Airport
  • Well-maintained rooms

Cons

  • No lift
  • Reports of inconsistent room assignments

Perfect for a quick stay

“Clean, comfortable twin bed room. Water lovely and hot, room temp, was nice and comfy. Carpet and all furnishings/bedding very clean. Very friendly and helpful Staff. Not forgetting great free parking, a must for large Family get togethers, celebrations and event hungry customers alike.”

Great location and service

Stayed here on several occasions. Handy location just off the A1. About 10-12 minutes walk from Newcastle Falcons ground. Friendly & polite staff as always. Special thanks to Dawn for local knowledge. Room clean, bed comfortable. See you again next season.
